I have a deep appreciation for the mysterious and unique qualities of Federico Fellini's films. Though I am definitely not an expert in Fellini nor have I seen all of his films, I am however drawn to their dreamlike and unconventional elements, such as the unusual settings, casting choices, and concepts. During the design of our previous Italian restaurant, ESTATE, I collaborated with a filmmaker friend to use manipulated stills from Fellini's movies as wall decorations.
As I have delved deeper into the realm of AI art, I find myself continually inspired by the works of Fellini. His unique storytelling and distinctive visual style seem to permeate through the digital creations I encounter, adding a touch of cinematic magic to the algorithms and data-driven processes that define this fascinating field. Fellini's ability to blend the surreal with the real, the fantastical with the mundane, resonates with me as I explore the possibilities of artificial intelligence in art.
Much like Fellini's films, AI art has the power to evoke complex emotions, challenge perceptions, and push boundaries. The way in which AI algorithms can analyze vast amounts of data and generate innovative visual content mirrors Fellini's own creative process of delving into the depths of the human psyche to unearth profound truths and hidden desires. In a sense, the AI becomes a modern-day oracle, channeling the spirit of Fellini to create art that is both thought-provoking and visually stunning.
My imaginary story, in which the following prompt is used as the basis for creating the images, continues to develop. Scenes change as I add original photography and apply my trained AI styles. These images have been created over the past 3 years, evolving in parallel with advancements in AI technology.
"The discovery of a fictional box of photographs at an antique market in Rome inspired the retelling of a tale about a group of friends who were artists, poets, and musicians. They shared a common desire to create a tribute film for their idol, Federico Fellini. Embarking on a journey through the Italian countryside, they searched for picturesque locations and encountered captivating individuals along the way."
In alignment with the images, the stories are collaborated with ChatGPT. Since ChatGPT allowed uploading images (something that Midjourney has been doing for a while), I have been able to push the AI for another layer. After an initial round of images from Midjourney and/or Emergent Properties, they are input to ChatGPT with keywords (Italy, countryside, caravan, filmmaking, avant-garde, cinema, arthouse style...) and start to unravel a fictional story. Here are some examples that pull the images and stories together. In some stories I have gone even further by naming the characters and giving them their roles in the 'film'.
